5 Productive New Year’s Resolutions

1. Wake Up Early 

World leaders, CEOs, successful business owners, overall productive people tend to be early risers. According to a 2008 study at University of Texas, students that reported being “morning people” earned a full point higher on their GPA than reported “night owls.” These grades helped students secure better career opportunities.

2. Work Out 

According to sleepypeople.com, President Obama, leader of the free world, is up by 6:45 every morning, and hits the gym first thing. Billionaire Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and one of the richest men in the world also works out first thing every morning. Sleepypeople.com says he hits the treadmill for an hour every day, while watching instructional videos so he can engage his body and mind simultaneously. Fit people are healthier, sharper people, and working out helps keep their focus and energy up throughout the day.

3. Say ‘Yes’ More 

Google’s Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, explained the benefits of saying yes in his commencement speech to the University of California at Berkley’s 2012 graduating class, “Find a way to say yes to things. Say yes to invitations to a new country. Say yes to meeting new friends. Say yes to learning a new language, picking up a new sport. Yes is how you get your first job, and your next job. Yes is how you find your spouse, and even your kids. Even if it’s a bit edgy, a bit out of your comfort zone, saying yes means you will do something new, meet someone new and make a difference in your life, and likely in others’ lives as well. … Yes is a tiny word that can do big things. Say it often.”

4. Make More Lists  

Lists help keep you on task when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Lists help you prioritize what absolutely needs to get done today, come hell or high water. Lists remind you that you have accomplished something today even when it feels like you haven’t, or you feels like you haven’t accomplished enough, you are getting stuff done regardless. Lists keep you organized, lists keep you sane, lists keep you going.

5. Sleep More  

Not sleeping is not a badge of honor, it’s something that should only be done if you have no other choice. According to the Wall Street Journal, sleep is a status symbol, but it doesn’t have to be, it just needs to be made a priority. Dr. Rapoport, an associate professor at NYU Langone Medical Center, told Health.com that sleep helps the heart, the mind, weight and more. It also increases focus and the attention span. Health.com also reported that a Stanford University study found that college football players that slept for at least 10 hours a night for seven to eight weeks straight improved their average sprint time, had less daytime fatigue and increased stamina.

Sleeping more makes you more productive, more efficient, and smarter. Make sure to get your sleep.
